What a fun topic! Lovely to listen in!
We have added audience participation for the last few years in our recitals and will absolutely be keen to add some of these - thank you!
"a Magpie" I love that and it's SO relatable - lol!
Thanks for watching! If you're catching up with the replay, let me know how your recitals went and what ideas you've been playing around with this year.
Love the "if you arnt a great player, then dont teach" In the youtube land of closet musicians teaching without ever playing professionally. Great video, very realistic.
If you have any books you'd love for me to check out, let me know in the comments below!
How fun to see you wonderful ladies together on a video! Great topic!
Glad you enjoyed it!
So much YES!
there are many "Do nots" but nobody really knows the "DO" when kids cry
This video is a short excerpt from a longer live I did. Check that out as I definitely go through what to do and much more.
I always start sobbing when someone asks me how I am
are you ok mate
I bought a cheap Alesis Recital piano at Amazon. It's 88 keys and has been OK to learn on and has 5 sounds. But I played some nice Roland and Yamaha pianos at Costco. 🎹 👍
Thank you for explaining this! I am a beginner student with the NV10S. My teacher is using several duet lessons where he plays the rhythm and I play the melody. I recorded his part on my iPhone and am happy that I can play them through the piano while I play my part.
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks for watching! I'm curious to hear if you have any more book recommendations for me to review. Let me know in the comments below.
I also like doing rhythm cup songs and turning these into dances, or drawing. Great tips and channel thanks!
Awesome! Thank you!
Those sound super special - great introduction!
So simple to understand, even for beginners. Thank you so much
Glad it was helpful!
Very helpful video, thank you 👍
Glad it was helpful!
It's a delightful collection by Angeline Bell. Lovely to hear your insights.
PS. Your videos always look SO very lovely.
Thank you so much!
Thank you so much for your helpful review. Much appreciated! Just to add that you can listen on ALL platforms like Apple Music, Amazon Music, etc.
Great tip!
It’s not necessarily your teaching. The parents have a big influence on whether the student sticks with it or quits. If the parents refuse to provide a suitable instrument, refuse to turn off the tv so the student can practice, and complain to the kids about the cost of lessons, all of these things subtly encourage the student to quit music. This is often a problem with parents who aren’t musicians themselves. They don’t know how much practice is necessary to make steady, consistent progress on the piano. Also our society discourages the arts as a whole and tells everyone it is better to spend our time on other subjects. Imagine if kids complained about learning math and science and parents let their kids just quit learning those subjects - there would be an uproar !
Very true. So many factors at play
Thank you
You're welcome
Yes. These are big things to process and deserve time and space.
This is not a good learning resource, half of the video is your logo and then you dont actually play the rhythm so students can't even hear what you are trying to teach
This video goes along with a specific theory book. It really is just meant to reinforce the word/symbol, it is not a complete guide or lesson video.
Thank you so much for this informative video!
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks for watching! If you're catching up on the replay, I’d love to hear your thoughts on your own piano teaching. What have you learned, what will you let go of, and what will you carry forward into the next academic year? Let me know in the comments.
Question: Where is a good place to buy a footstool with a pedal... so that little kids can play the pedal while still maintaining good posture? My searches online aren't going very well. But I know my teacher had one back in the 80s that totally worked!
It’s called a pedal extender, that may help your search. Mine is from the UK and it’s called Allegroped.
Wow! You give good advice! However, I wish I wasn't in a financial hurry to gain more students to take this risk. Thanks.
Catching up on the replay. Never done a newsletter but I've thought about it several times.
I was trying to figure out why my recordings were cutting out at 8 bars and you have saved me. Thanks so much!
Glad I could help!
do you serve refreshments at the end of your recitals? If so, how detailed?
No I don’t
Thanks for watching! If you're catching up with the replay, I'd love to hear how you've helped tearful students. Let me know in the comments below.
I like to have 1 week of lessons after my recital, so we can talk about the recital, play review music games, and give a summer challenge.
Can you tell me what app are you using on the tablet in the video? Maybe you can recommend one to store and easily buy sheet music, thank you
Just bought your book. Thank you!
Hope you enjoy it!
I am not an actual teacher but need some professional advise. I am a member of a Morris side in st Louis, mo. We have a young member that has been with us for over a year. She is very enthusiastic but can not step to the music. She understands her issue and wants to work on it but i don't know what to do to help her. I am a dancer by nature and have some experience with teaching dance but don't know how to tackle this. I also don't want to hurt her feelings. Do you have any suggestions?
Thanks for watching the live! If you're catching up on the replay, I'd love to hear what you're procrastinating on and why it's something you avoid. Let me know in the comments.
can you share some pdf of your book about solving piano problems? Id love to buy it but want to check if its good.
You can view previews on Amazon
I would love to watch a recording of the Turbo Boost, if I can afford it, as I can't afford to travel to the States right now.
Hi what do you think about the MTB performance exams? Where the student plays 4 - 5 pieces only
Haven’t tried them so I can’t really comment. I like the idea, though!
...well done Video. My question is - why not a Hybrid with a soundboard like NV5?
We have a NV5 in the other room. Check out my other videos to see it. ☺️
I can totally relate to Nicola: information overload and feeling pressured to put it all together. Speaking for myself, I tend to put that pressure on myself. But sometimes, whoever is providing the information does not also provide the atmosphere for honest evaluation and processing. They kind of assume you are in sync with them and have reached the expected conclusion. So, this topic is an eye-opener for me as a teacher and how I provide info to my students! 👍
I was a crier, but I'd say it was due to yet another reason: a build up of stress from other events or cronic life situations such as living in a stressful school or home environment. Some teeny tiny thing at piano could trigger the release of that pent up stress.
Good point and thank you for sharing!
Yay APTA! It was a very helpful session.
Love this talk, and the openness that you shared about this topic, Nicola. I was a sometimes-weepy child in music lessons as well, but most of my tears were due to my own high standards for myself. I was blessed with kind, caring teachers who let me work through those emotions when needed (except for one very insensitive and often mean college band director who made many college students cry openly IN REHEARSAL - Gah!). I am so appreciative of your perspective on this topic. An excellent assessment of many causes and possible approaches. One thing I immediately thought of that was maybe not fully fleshed-out is that children who are experiencing big emotions need the grown-ups around them to acknowledge those feelings. Feelings aren't bad. They are valid and important. When my own children are in the throes of a tantrum, it usually helps to come alongside them and express my understanding for the way they are feeling, saying things like "you must feel so mad about that right now," or "I'm sorry that happened to you, I can see you are very sad about it." It's EXACTLY like the scene in Inside Out when Joy is trying to console Bing Bong (who is busy crying candy tears in total despair) with silliness, games, telling him to stop crying, that it'll be ok, etc. But it is Sadness who comes alongside and says "I'm sorry they took something that you loved. I bet you and Riley had great adventures....yah, that's sad." and her empathy helps him to work through it and snap right out of that despair. Children can't express those kinds of things in words, and it helps for the grown-ups around them to put words to what they may be feeling, and acknowledge it's OK to feel that way. Hope this is helpful to some!
Yes! This is something I actively practice doing too. ☺️
What do you think of the Alfred series?
Haven’t used it personally

Yes, so many are watching the horizontal placement especially if studying on an app. I listened a lot as a student and then did figure out the math as well.
I love the phrase "the maths of music". Lovely!
Good point
One issue i have found is parents who don’t want to invest in a decent instrument. They get the cheapest thing they can find and then when their child outgrows that instrument (which can happen fairly quickly) they don’t want to upgrade and their child can’t properly practice and so the whole experience becomes frustrating for both student and teacher.. the parent isn’t a musician themselves so they don’t understand the importance of a good, suitable instrument and the child through no fault of their own gets frustrated and quits. Another issue is the parent refusing to create the time and space for piano practice. They won’t turn off the tv, or get siblings to settle down in another area of the house so the child can practice. When the child or parent does not see improvement (because the child isn’t practicing) they decide they have no talent and pull out of lessons. A teacher can’t force the student to practice throughout the week. It has to be on the parents to enforce that and create an environment amenable to practice time.
That’s why I’m very clear about all these things before they even start. I find it’s worth it to not have the issues down the road.
